The personal statement is one of the most difficult parts of your UCAS application. It is also one of the most crucial elements in the process of getting your place at a medical/dental school. After viewing your grades or predicted grades, admissions officers will use your personal statement to decide if you are eligible to gain entry. As there are so many applications and not much time, it is important to create a personal statement that shines and catches the eye of the admissions officers. It is your opportunity to show your chosen University why they should choose you.

Here are some Do's and Dont's to consider when writing your personal statement:

Do...

  • Make it personal to you, and focus on your good points.
  • Include any relevant work experience that you have gained within the medical/dental field.
  • Emphasise your enthusiasm about pursuing a career in medicine/dentistry.
  • Show that you take part in activities outside of medicine/dentistry making you an all-rounder.

Don't...

  • Copy a personal statement from a friend or from the internet – this will be detected by a plagiarism site used by UCAS.
  • Lie about your achievements as you could be caught out during interview.
  • Spend too much time talking about non-related subjects to medicine/dentistry.
  • Write only one draft. Re-write your first draft a number of times to detect all possible mistakes before it is submitted.
